FIBA qualifiers recap: Delow, Marcos, Njie and Lindo Jr

ALAGIE BARRA NJIE, Sweden / Basketball Lowen Braunschweig
GERMANY

It’s been nothing short of spectacular watching Barra Njie running the open floor like a gazelle or getting downhill at will this FIBA window. You can almost feel the anticipation when he brings the rock up in half-court sets, calls a high screen and then changes the pace of his dribble all the way to the rim. Such a combination of ambidextrous handles, long steps and explosiveness. It’s not a surprise, though. Barra’s athleticism and slasher profile have allowed him to travel and play all over the world (Sweden, USA High-School and G League, Spain and now Germany) despite his young age.

🇸🇪 Barra Njie ('01) has been selected by the Delaware Blue Coats (76ers) in the 34th position of the 2021 G-League Draft.

Although he relies on transition offense and high-picks to punish mismatches and defenses collapsing around him, Njie is productive in ISO plays too. Barra’s wingspan, agility and leap power give him the edge in the lane, but he must improve his isolation efficiency (just 25%, by Synergy) and, more importantly, his touch at the rim (36% in the painted area). Never mind. Barra’s motor will keep going as he keeps his balance and finds a way to squeeze through and hang at the rim. And regardless of being lightweight he can draw contact (2.3FD per game) and get to the FT-line with ease. However, his 56% from the charity stripe underlines a major concern in his game.

#EuroBasketQualifiers Impressed by Barra Njie (01) showing this window: 11.0pts, 3.5ast, 4.5rbs & 1.2stl w/ his length, change of gears and athleticism

Njie is a certified slasher by trade that races past defenders for fun, but his shooting motion and threat from range are far from optimal at this point. A lot of it can be blamed on Barra’s eyebrow set-point and his flat release and low arc shot. Other inconsistencies are related to his permanent sprinter stance, or how Barra’s guide-hand interferes too much with his form. But it’s also worth noting the striking difference in 3FG volume when he plays for Sweden or for his BBL club, Basketball Lowen Braunschweig (2.3 3PA at a 35.7% clip vs 0.7 3PA at a 25.0% clip). His latest show wearing the Swedish jersey is pretty encouraging in that sense.
We can all agree that Barra Njie will need more time to fix his shot to become a decent spot-up option. As of today, he looks better suited as an off the dribble or on-the-move catch-and-shoot guy. But a much easier goal for the Swede in the short run should be ball security and refining his overall IQ and off-the-dribble creation for the team. Barra has almost two TOs per game in the CreditEasy BBL, mostly because of his ‘at speed and on the brink’ approach can easily turn into questionable decision-making and some tough passing reads at times.

Only the beginning. 🫡🇸🇪@NjieBarra capped off an exciting @EuroBasket Qualifier's window by reaching his first 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ POINTS with the Men's NT!

Congrats Barra – we're looking forward to many more. 👏#SwedenBasketball | #DareToBelieve pic.twitter.com/qGEdXCcmT3

To be fair, Njie plays with a lot more swag and freedom in the Swedish set-up than at Braunschweig, hence his numbers have skyrocketed during this FIBA window. As it seems, sharing point-guard duties with two older and well-travelled American guards like Ahmaad Rorie and TJ Crockett doesn’t bring the best out of him in limited minutes. Especially when his lack of range limits his offensive contribution.

But on the other end, Njie offers legit defensive versatility in the perimeter and up-to-the-roof upside. Just picture him suffocating ball-handlers at the point-of-attack, squeezing through screens, rotating and contesting open shooters and switching matchups. A lot to like about the 6’3 Swedish guard, especially if he can replicate his performances with Sweden at club level. Until then, we’ll keep pushing Barra Nije’s bandwagon as one of the most explosive and exciting young guards in Europe right now.
